Crossing her fingers she looked at the most important test she’d have to take in her life. She couldn’t bear to look.
“You look Rachel.”
Rachel looked at the pregnancy test that revealed that Charity was indeed pregnant like she’d thought.
“You’re pregnant.”
Charity sat down unsure what to make of the news. She was lucky to have met Rachel after moving from Harmony to Oakridge. It was such a cliché she was pregnant from that that one nightstand she had with Reese when she got really drunk.
“Oh Miguel.”
“Is Miguel the father?”
“What?”
“Earth to Charity is Miguel the daddy?”
Charity burst into tears wishing that Miguel was the father. She suspected something was wrong when she kept having to run to the bathroom to throw up but she was hoping that she was just sick. This wasn’t how she wanted things to turn out. She was supposed to be married to Miguel instead of pregnant and single in a new place unable to be with the man she loved because of the deal she made with Death to save her niece Maria. She didn’t regret saving her life but at the same time a part of her wished that Maria was her baby with Miguel instead of her cousin Kay’s daughter.
Rachel went into the kitchen to give her friend some time alone. She also needed to call Magnus to tell him that she might be late because she didn’t want to leave Charity alone when she was this upset. She hoped he wouldn’t be mad about his dinner being a little late.
“Hello.”
Magnus I think I might be late tonight.”
Charity walked into the kitchen and whispered, “It’s fine I know you have plans. Don’t change them on my account.”
“Rachel?”
“Sorry Magnus can you hang on a sec?”
“Is something wrong?”
Charity grabbed the phone, “Magnus she’ll be there for your date. She’s just being a good friend but I’m fine really.”
She passed the phone back to Rachel.
“I could call someone else.”
“No I’ll be there.”
“See you.”
Rachel hung up and turned to Charity who was looking in the fridge to find something to eat that wouldn’t send her racing to the bathroom. She decided to go with the safety of toast. She took two slices of bread and popped into the toaster.
“So who is Magnus? Is he your boyfriend?
Rachel hesitated before saying anything. Yes her friend and roomie was from Harmony where weirdness abounded but vampire weirdness she wasn’t quite sure about.
“Kind of.”
“So is he gorgeous?”
“He’s like Brad Pitt, Jude Law, and Orlando Bloom all rolled into one.”
“Well go and have fun. I’ll be fine. I could use some time to think things through.”
“Don’t think too long sweetie I won’t want to have to clean up exploded brain all over the carpet. I’ve heard it’s hell to get out.”
Charity smiled at her friend’s weird sense of humor. Rachel grabbed her purse and took off. Charity sat down on the couch thinking about what she should do next. She’d have to find a doctor to make sure she really was pregnant which she was already pretty certain of since those tests were pretty damn accurate. She had no way of getting in touch with Reese since he left Harmony shortly before she did.
“Well I’m keeping you little one even though I can’t go back to Harmony.”
She thought about contacting the Durkees but wasn’t sure if that would be such a good idea since they’d probably try to convince her to come back to Harmony and she couldn’t do that not if she wanted to keep the bargain she made with Death. Reaching for the remote Charity channel surfed for a while and started watching some telenovela eventually falling asleep.
Rachel walked into Club Fang where she found Magnus waiting in his usual place.
“Hi Rachel.”
“Hi Mags.”
After feeding Rachel asked him if he could use another Donor Chick.”
“Do you have someone in mind?”
“Yeah my friend Charity.”
“Does she know about vampires?”
“She’s from this weird town Harmony.”
“Ah I’ve heard of that place. She shouldn’t be too surprised about vampires existing.”
“She won’t go into detail but she told me it was quite a strange place.”
“Ask her if she’s interested and call me so I can make an appointment with my doctor.”
‘I should mention that she’s probably pregnant at least she is according to the stick she peed on earlier.”
“That won’t be a problem.”
“Won’t she need a baby doctor what do you call them Pediatrician or something?”
“My doctor is also an OBGYN or baby doctor if you prefer.”
“Cool I’ll ask her when I get home.”
“Don’t worry she’ll be well taken care of if she becomes a Donor for me.”
Rachel leaned over and kissed Magnus on the cheek. She hoped that one day she’d become a vampire but for the time being she was content with being a Donor Chick for him. Rachel went back to her place and found Charity sleeping on the couch with the TV on so she turned it off and gently shook her.
“Huh?”
“Charity it’s me Rachel I have some good news for you.”
Charity rubbed her eyes and sat up and stretched. Rachel told her about vampires and how she was a Donor Chick and asked if she’d be interested in becoming one too.
“After what I’ve seen I guess I’m not to surprised to find out about vampires. It sounds good to me since this would take a load off my mind and I could go back to college. I had to put it on hold when I had to leave Harmony so it would be nice to get back to it.”
“So you’re not weirded out?”
“No not at all.”
The two hugged and they went off to bed. The next day Charity went to the doctor and confirmed that she was pregnant. It was such a relief to know that she’d be well taken care of since Rachel had such a nice place courtesy of being a Donor Chick. She was going to meet him that evening when he came to Rachel’s place so she was kind of excited since she always found vampires in books and movies intriguing.
“Maybe things are going to work out for me after all. I’ll have money coming in so I can take care of the two of us and get a kick ass place of my own and start my new life.”
Charity couldn’t help but yearn for a different path but this was her life so she was going to embrace it. It really was a lucky thing to have met Rachel who helped put her life back on track. She wasn’t sure if she’d make it but she had a great friend and a baby on the way. It wasn’t the way she’d imagined it would turn out but it didn’t seem too bad.
