Being A Watcher

1. Being English or at least having the accent is a big help. After all the Council resides in England.

2. Tweed can be your friend but as you loosen up the clothes go more casual.

3. Any good Watcher will be sporting glasses. They make you look all smart and Watcherlike.

4. Having a backbone is a must. Since the Council is clueless in England a Watcher must be able to stand up to them when they are being idiots. Warning: This could lead to being fired.

5. Caring for your Slayer is a good thing. Don't be ashamed if you grow to love your Slayer and feel paternal towards her.

6. Realize that things aren't always black and white. There are shades of gray.

7. The Watchers Council isn't always right. Just because the 18th birthday ritual has gone on for centuries doesn't mean it should continue in modern times.

8. Must have vast knowledge of demons and other things that go bump in the night.

9. Having a second job as a librarian or owning a magick shop can be useful tools that aid in research not to mention some extra cash in the pocket.

10. One must enjoy being around books and perhaps the odor as well.

11. A Watcher not only watches he/she fights as well. Know how to use the weapons your Slayer will use since you'll be training her.

Being A Slayer

1. You have to be able to improvise if you should happen to be weaponless. Use what's available and make it work.

2. If you wear heels you need to know how to run in them otherwise stick with flats and sneakers. Also a benefit of sneakers is the lack of a clacking sound if you are running or walking fast.

3. Carry weapons in your purse just in case. Vampires can pop up anywhere so keep your eyes peeled.

4. Of course you must know how to kick some serious ass. There is a lot of kicking and hitting going on. You need to know how to use weapons.

5. Having your own Scooby Gang to help with various things like research, hacking, and magick comes in handy not to mention having friends backing you up is always a plus. Also knowing a demon or two can come in handy with demony knowledge.

6. You have to be ok with seeing a lot of blood since blood will be shed including your own.

7. Last but certainly not least you must be a girl since the Slayer is always a girl but guys you can always be part of the gang.

Scholar's Of The Infinite

They broke off from the Watchers Council hundreds of years ago. But one of the Watchers who split away from the Council to help form the Scholars was Henry Millbank, who was the primary combat trainer for the Watchers in those days. He developed most of their combat techniques. Watchers still learn the Millbank system, and Scholars as well. The believed the Watchers were a bit namby-pamby. Putting all of their enforcement eforrts behind Slayers, who as you know, tend to be teenage girls, but still. The Scholars tought the Watchers themselves should take a more active role in battling the forces of darkness, and when the Watchers refused, the Scholars broke away. They exceed the Watchers in their depth of their dedication to the study of the supernatural, and far exceed the Watchers in the level of brutality to which they'll stoop. They're totally dedicated to secrecy and to the importance of their mission, and they'll stop at nothing to see that they can carry it out. If they beleived the civilians were a threat to their mission, or might somehow expose their workings killing would be no big thing. The end to their minds, justifies the means. Battling evil will save lives in the long run, even if it costs a few from time to time.

Crossbow

The crossbow comes from ancient China where it was invented around 400 B.C.. It was the most accuarate weapon until the rifle was invented in the 1400's A.D.. It was smaller than the composite bow. The bow was mounted horizontally on a frame. The bowstring and the arrow were drawn back with a ratchet mechanism and released with a trigger. They shoot with accuracy up to 400 yards. They didn't require as much strength and training to use them.

The Guardian

I'd forgotten. I'd forgotten how young you would be. Comes with waiting. Mind plays tricks. I see you've found our weapon. One of many well a time was now I'm alone in the world. Nope I'm as real as you just well let me put it this way I look good for my age. I've been waiting. You pulled it out of the rock. I was one of those who put it in there. A weapon. A scythe forged in secrecy for one like you who...I'm sorry what's your name? No really? We forged it in secrecy and kept it hidden from the Shadow Men who...Ah yes then you know. And they became the Watchers and the Watchers watched the Slayers but we were watching them. Guardians who want to help and protect you. We forged this centuries ago halfway around the world. Forged there then it was put to use right here to kill the last pure demon that walked upon the earth. The rest were already driven under and then there were men here and then there were monks and then there was a town and now there was you and the scythe remained hidden. We hid too. We had to until now. We're the last surprise. That is really up to you. This is a powerful weapon but you already have weapons. Use it wisely and perhaps you can beat back the rising darkness one way or the other it can only mean an end is truly near.

The Watchers Council

It has existed for centuries and one tradition is at least 1200 years old. The Council would track all potential Slayers, trained and assigned a Watcher to each Slayer and Potential, and regulate the entire tradition of the Slayer. The Council also kept a vast library of scholarship on Slayer traditons and all kinds of evil beings. Most of the council along with the library were destroyed when it was blown up by Caleb except for a few that Giles took beforehand.

Being a Watcher is like guarding the door to your child's nursery while animals roam the halls of your home.

The head of the Watcher's Council demonstrates with his every word and action his determination to make sure that the Council controls the Slayer and her Watcher and that everyone follows the Council's orders, rules, tradition, and obedience are the best way to fight evil. Unfortunately he made the decision to get off his ass and do something too late because the building blew up shortly after he made his announcement.

The Slayers

The Slayer is the champion of the human world against the forces of evil, the one girl in all the world born with the strength and skill to hunt the vampire. She is part of a long and ancient tradition. Each individual Slayer is just a link in a chain of lives that has spanned thousands of years. The Slayer tends to have a short life span since many don't make it to the age of 20 or even 18 when they are tested. Thanks to Rupert Giles that test has been elminated.

The blood of the Slayer has special powers both magickal and medical. The Slayer's blood released the Master from his prison and it also cured Angel when he was posoined by Faith. Also it is considered an aphrodiasac by Spike but consider the source and take it with a drop of blood.

Her son Gervais was turned into a vampire so she had to kill him. Her husband was taken back to England. She refused a new Watcher and the whole village with the exception of Isabeau died in the fire. She was raised by her father who was safe and sound in England.

1661 Caribbean

The Slayer is invincible not as an individual, but as an ancient force for good, which is renewed with every death. Kill a Slayer and another rises or in Buffy's case rises again and again.

Most Slayers work alone and die alone. In a world with only one Slayer to fight a whole universe of badness, the Slayer can use all the help she can get. Buffy is unqiue because she has friends and family.

The Potentials

Waiting to be called. There were many more like them all over the world now there's just a handful and they're all on their way to Sunnydale. The others were murdered in cold blood. As well as their Watchers. We always feared that this day would come where there would be an attack but not just against an individual Slayer but against the whole line. Yes to erase all Slayers in training and Watchers along with their methods.

The First Slayer

I have no speech, no name. I live in the action of death. The blood cry, the penetrating wound. I am destruction, absolute, alone. That pretty much sums up but this girl is not much into the hygiene thing since she could use some shampoo and conditioner not to mention a bath and the brushing of her teeth.

She died at Spike's hands in 1977 leaving behind a four year old boy who was raised by her Watcher and later turned up in Sunnydale.

Spike put it best into words so here is his take on why this Slayer is different from the others. Every day you wake up to the same bloody question that haunts you: Is today the day I'm gonna die? Death is on your heels, baby, and sooner, or later its gonna catch you. Part of you wants it, not only to stop the fear and uncertainty, but because you're just a little bit in love with it. Death is your art. You make it with your hands day after day...Part of you is desperate to know what it's like, where does it lead you? Every Slayer has a death wish. Even you. The only reason you've lasted as long as you have is you've got ties to the world, your mum, your brat kid sister, the Scoobies. They all tie you here. Buffy's friends are her emotional refuge whenever the life of the Slayer becomes too violent, too scary, too painful.

Buffy's Watchers

Merrick

Killed before Buffy moved to Sunnydale by a vamp. He is the one that informed Buffy that she was the Slayer after India died and she was activated in 1996.

Rupert Giles

Looks like a scholar but is also a seasoned and ruthless demon fighter. Fired because he was too close to Buffy and broke one of their many dumb rules. A few years later he was reinstated but served in an unofficial capacity.

Wesley Wyndham-Price

An ideal Watcher: scholarly, slavishly obedient to all the Councils rules and tradtions, and has no experience at all in the real world. He actually screams when he comes face to face with a vampire. He gets a little better after the whole mess with the mayor and Faith although he never actually did any fighting since he was knocked out cold right away but hey points for effort. He was fired from the Council because of his royal screwup with Faith. He becomes a rouge demon hunter and ends up in LA where he now works with Angel and his crew.

Kendra AKA She-Giles

She was activated when Buffy briefly drowned. She is highly trained, disciplined, knowing no life but that of the Slayer. As a baby her parents turned her over to her Watcher to raise her. She was killed by Drusilla and her killer nail.

Watcher: Roger Zabuto

Faith

Activated after Kendra's death she becomes the Anti-Slayer, reveling in power and lawlessness, turning rogue and committing a whole series of crimes until she is finally redeemed by Angel and freely goes to jail. She has since broken out of jail to help with the whole saving of the world thing and her whereabouts are unknown.

Watcher: Unnamed woman

She was killed in Boston by Kakistos one seriously ugly vamp that needed a giant sized stake to poof him with.

Bogus Watcher: Gwendelyn Post

A rogue Watcher who came to Sunnydale to trick the Slayers into leading her to a mystic glove. She was fried by the glove's energy when Buffy cut her hand off. She is also another of those in a long line that has knocked out Giles.

New Watcher: Wesley Wyndham-Price

He was briefly her Watcher after the bogus watcher was blown to bits. He really screwed up big time and made a bad situation worse. He was fired for his incompetence but he's doing much better where he is and is much sexier since he was pretty dorky there for a while.

Faith's Take On The Life Of A Slayer

She has since stopped believing in this philosophy and is one of the good guys.

The Potentials

While they do not possess the full power of a Slayer they do contain certain powerful abilities: a small fraction of the power along with a Slayer's instincts.

Unnamed girl that hung at at Tattoo Nachtlocal. She had hot pink hair with black bangs, a nose ring and metal collar. She was one of the first to die at the hands of the Bringers and the first one that Buffy dreamed about.

Ladies and Gentlemen our fears have been confirmed. The First evil has declared all out war on this institution. The first volleys flew most effective. I for one think it's time we struck back.
